Dimensions: H. 91 ; Seat height 43 ; D. 45 ; W. 47 (cm.)
Paris, circa 1770-1780
A rare Transition-style chair, standing on four scrolled console legs topped with acanthus leaves. The belt and backrest are horseshoe-shaped, with a ribboned rush motif. The inside of the belt is hollowed out, "élégi", to make it stronger and lighter.
An iconic model
Although Delanois now disputes with Georges Jacob over the paternity of the console legs, he is no less attached to them. Prolific commissions were placed with him over a period of fifteen years, enabling him to express his talent and creativity through these shapes. This is evidenced by the chairs preserved at the Chateau de Maisons, others from Fontainebleau now at Versailles, and a suite of ten chairs and two armchairs very close to home, sold at Sotheby's London on July 6, 2010, lot 44. These chairs, also of royal provenance, were delivered to Mme Elisabeth in Montreuil. Closer to home, a similar pair of chairs, from the collection of Hubert de Givenchy, sold at Christie's Paris, June 17, 2022, lot 654.
Condition report: seat upholstered in Lelièvre silk, with matching trimmings. Seat upholstered in full later, wear to foot ends, restorations and accidents.
