Very rare and magnificent hand candlestick in solid silver, Italian work, Papal States period, mid-19th century.
Resting on a plain, ovoid-shaped base, this pass-through is decorated with an atypical scene. On its terrace, a swan, with extremely fine detail in its carving, stands out with its grace and majestic symbolism.
A little hoard-like monkey seems to be observing it, hidden behind a stylized tree whose end receives the candlestick and its bobeche encased in oblong flared petals.
As for the annular handle simulating bamboo, decorated with a large, finely chiseled leaf serving as a thumb rest, it rises elegantly in a volute, its base with double leafy sconces emerging on the terrace.
Of remarkable quality of execution, this very original model, like a nod to the antics of the 18th century animal painter Christophe Huet, is inscribed with the Italian hallmarks existing under the papal states, perhaps Rome or Frosinone for the beginning or mid-19th century.
Hallmarks on the edge as well as on the bobèche (goldsmith's mark visible on the bobèche but illegible).
Precious piece with a rare subject, certainly unique, sponsored by a high-ranking personality.
Micro-scratches from normal use, tiny irregularities of the oval (see photo). Excellent condition.
