    <meta charset="UTF-8" />Portière Tapisserie Verdure Aubusson, early 18th century

    Dimensions: 2.52 m x 1.47 cm
    Materials: wool and silk

    - True to the Aubusson tradition of verdure, this verdant landscape resonates like an open window on nature's abundance. This oasis of greenery, like a silent retreat that no human noise seems likely to disturb, brings together in a small space several elements considered by the lissiers to symbolize rural happiness: a venerable tree bearing the weight of years and harboring abundant life, a quietly perched bird, flowering plants.

    - The drawing is meticulous, with a search for depth thanks to the succession of different planes. The perception of foliage volume is finely conveyed by light green tones juxtaposed with darker ones, and by flashes of light introduced by touch, thanks to the use of golden yellow silk, at the tips of the leaves.

    - Of infinite variety, verdures remain a constant in the production of Aubusson workshops between the 17th and 18th centuries. Their main theme was the display of verdant nature, but they differed in the quality of their designs, the finesse of their weaving and their borders. The tapestry we're looking at, a portière, has a decorative border featuring flowers and foliage arranged in carefully composed garlands or falls. The border element on the left-hand side is different (floral motifs, goldsmith's work), and has over time been tucked in with great aesthetic care so as not to compromise the harmony of the motifs and ensure even ageing of the colors.

-As is. Restorations and wear, particularly at the bottom. Upholstery lined, fastening bar at top.
