Rare can come into its own here, of all the chariot clocks, Mercury's is the hardest to find.
Designed, chiseled and marketed by the bronzier Claude Galle at the beginning of the 19th century, this clock in gilded bronze and brown patina for the horse was created by Croutelle the elder. Indeed, a preparatory drawing in pen with watercolor highlights inscribed under the name and dated: Croutelle ainé, n° 126 of the year 1803, is kept at the National Library (Cabinet des Estampes).
This magnificent clock represents Mercury, standing on a carriage taking the form of a bale of cotton and four wheels of fortune, holding his caduceus in his left hand and his horse's reindeer in the other.
The patinated bronze animal wears a saddle and a collar chiseled with gilt bronze flowers.
Rectangular base decorated with attributes of the mythological god: garlands of flowers, cornucopias, caduceus and laurel leaves. The sides decorated with maritime trade attributes, very finely chiseled anchors and tridents.
The set ends with four spinning tops.
Overhauled movement, in perfect working order, with eight-day running autonomy, strikes at the hour and a half on gongs, wire balance suspension and Breguet hands.
Very good state of preservation, original gilding.
Empire period.
