Gilt bronze and patinated terminal clock, decorated with a representation of Belisarius* carrying his guide (after the painting by Baron Gérard**), Roman numeral dial chased with large palmettes, and ornamented with friezes of pearls, ovals and stylized foliage, from the Restauration period of the 19th century.
This clock is in good condition. It works, but may need to be overhauled. We have the key and the pendulum (reported).
Bélisaire portant son guide piqué par un serpent (Belisarius carrying his guide bitten by a snake): presented at the Salon of 1795 and lost today, this painting nevertheless survives in a 1797 reduction, perhaps by Gérard himself, preserved at the Getty Museum. Taking up a subject treated by Gérard's master David, the painting was interpreted as a metaphor for the return of Revolutionary immigrants after the fall of Robespierre. An engraving was made in 1806 by Auguste Boucher-Desnoyers.
Please note: wear to the bronze patina, slight wear to the dial, dirt and age, see photos.
* Belisarius
born around 500 A.D. in Macedonia, on the borders of Illyria and Thrace, and died in Constantinople in 565, was an Eastern Roman general. Often victorious, he is sometimes considered the last great Roman general. His successes contributed greatly to the reconquest of the Eastern Roman Empire by Emperor Justinian, under whose reign he spent most of his career. During his lifetime, Belisarius was Justinian's greatest general, but later fell out of favor with him.
** François Gérard (1770-1837)
also known as Baron Gérard, was a French neo-classical history painter, portraitist and illustrator. A pupil of Jacques-Louis David, he was one of the leading painters of the First Empire and Restoration periods. A court painter under Napoleon I, then First Painter to Kings Louis XVIII and Charles X, Gérard enjoyed great renown, not only in France, but throughout Europe. Nicknamed "the painter of kings, the king of painters", he was the portraitist of every European sovereign family. His salon, one of the most renowned of his time, welcomed the greatest personalities.
