    Russian traveling officer's clock, gilt bronze case finely chased with plant motifs and small flowers, visible movement signed H. Kreitz* in St Petersburg, repeater, on-demand and alarm chimes, enameled dial with Arabic numerals, beveled glass on all sides, circa 1850 mid-19th century.

    This clock is in good condition and of very high quality. It works perfectly. Ringing on demand with the button on top. It rings at the half-hour and the hour + alarm clock. We have the key.
    Please note: a few hairs on the dial enamel, some soiling (notably on the glass) and slight ageing, see photos.
    * Kreitz Hubertus (1811-1896):

    Son of a merchant, he learned the watchmaking trade in London and Paris. In 1837, he moved to St. Petersburg and found work in a watchmaking store on Nevsky Avenue, the city's boulevard, which he later took over. Kreitz achieved an astonishing level of skill in watchmaking. He bought movements from Switzerland and France and "refined" them into precious works of art that he sold to a wealthy clientele. His clocks indicating the day, month and phases of the moon - known as calendar clocks - and his unusual small clocks were famous the world over. According to tradition, the world's three smallest pocket watches, about the size of a small American gold dollar, were owned by Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna (1798-1860), wife of Tsar Nicholas I, Queen Victoria of England and Kreitz's daughter.
    Kreitz quickly made such a fortune with his watches that he was able to retire as a multiple millionaire as early as 1855. After stays in Hamburg and Wiesbaden, he settled in Biebrich in 1870. It was here that the family moved into the first villa on Rheingaustraße (in the immediate vicinity of Biebrich Castle), which Kreitz had built to his own design by Wiesbaden architect Ludwig Euler. Kreitz can be considered the greatest benefactor of Biebrich's small Catholic community. In 1890, he had the spire of St. Mary's Church, consecrated in 1876, dismantled, donated the flamboyant Gothic altar with the statues of the saints (now in the choir), the pulpit, the communion bench and three stained glass windows, and had the choir painted in neo-Gothic style. Kreitz found his final resting place alongside his wife, who died in 1885, in a prestigious vault in the Briebrich cemetery. The Hubertusstrasse street commemorates his memory.
