A rare and important Napoleon III period clock depicting a young bacchante accompanied by a goat, a remarkable allegorical composition inspired by the procession of Bacchus, god of wine and the grape harvest.
With its particularly imposing presence at 57 cm high, this clock is a true decorative and collector's piece. It beautifully combines the richness of finely gilded bronze, the depth of a high-quality patinated bronze, and the elegance of white marble highlights.
At the top, the young woman, dressed in classical style and adorned with vine leaves, affectionately holds a goat at her side. The sculpted group displays fine modeling and a pleasing quality of execution, while the architectural base is richly decorated with bunches of grapes, foliage, scrolls, and motifs inspired by the Louis XV decorative repertoire, revived during the Second Empire. The enamel dial is signed "J.B. Marchand, 59 rue de Richelieu," a renowned Parisian address from the 19th century. It is framed by a richly decorated gilt-bronze mount.

The clock is in very good overall condition. The gilding, particularly luminous, admirably highlights the fine chasing. The movement is complete with its key, pendulum, and bell, and is in working order.
With its substantial size, the quality of its gilding, and the originality of its subject matter, this clock is a remarkable example of Second Empire decorative taste. It would be perfectly at home in a classic interior, a collection of French clocks, or on a prestigious mantelpiece.

A beautiful and imposing 19th-century Parisian piece, combining decorative quality, elegance, and presence.
