    Melancholy Love Clock, Empire Period
French work from the Empire period, circa 1800

Depicts the god of Love (Eros/Cupid), recognizable by the bow he holds in his right hand. In contrast to his usual joyful or playful representations, here he adopts a pensive and reverie posture, his head resting on his left hand, symbolizing amorous melancholy or heartbreak.
The dog, a faithful companion, sits to the right, gazing upwards at the clock face, symbolizing unwavering loyalty in the face of this melancholy.

The bas-relief (base): The gilt bronze frieze adorning the base illustrates a mythological scene linked to romantic tragedy or loss (evoking the myth of Adonis wounded or Narcissus), thus reinforcing the poetic theme of unrequited love.

    Gilt bronze, polished with agate.
    Rests on four topi.

In very good condition, the clock comes with its original pendulum and winding key.
The clock is functional and has just been serviced.

Height: 37 cm, Width: 32 cm, Depth: 11 cm.
