    Octagonal wall clock painted with flowers, Napoleon III period
    French folk art, second half of the 19th century (circa 1860-1880)
    Beautiful octagonal wall clock made of painted sheet metal with a polychrome decoration of flowers and foliage on a dark brown background. The enamel dial with Roman numerals is surrounded by a hinged, glazed brass bezel.

    The back reveals a mechanical striking movement with its original pendulum and escapement. This type of clock was frequently made in eastern France, in Franche-Comté, or in the Swiss border regions, where clockmakers produced decorative models for rural and bourgeois homes.
    The hand-painted floral decoration and the octagonal shape are reminiscent of certain clocks known as "provincial clocks" or "simplified Franche-Comté wall clocks" from the late 19th century.
