Charming rectangular ointment box in blackened wood, decorated with brass and precious wood marquetry. The lid features a finely cut central brass cartouche, highlighted by rosewood parts, framed by double geometric fillets also in brass.
The overall effect is one of refined craftsmanship typical of the Second Empire. Little girls can be seen on the front of the box.
The case's interior is equally meticulous: the bottom of the lid is veneered in rosewood, while the bottle compartments are carved in solid rosewood.
The two cut crystal bottles are fitted with solid silver stoppers (Minerve hallmarked), finely decorated with pearled friezes and acanthus leaves. The inside of the stoppers is lined with vermeil, indicating their use for delicate products such as ointments, balms or perfumed creams.
The box is fitted with its original, fully functional lock and original gilded key.
It has been entirely restored with care, respecting period materials and finishes.
French work, circa 1860.
