    • John Emms (1844 – 1 November 1912) was an English artist.
Artist Biography Emms was born in Blofield, Norfolk, the son of artist Henry William Emms. He became an avid hunter and became famous for his paintings of horses, and of dogs, particularly foxhounds and terriers. He exhibited in London from 1866 to 1903, particularly at the Royal Academy several times & the Suffolk Street Gallery. His works are mainly in oils, they show a confident hand, bold brush strokes, generous layers of paint and a great understanding of the physical elements of his subjects.
    • He married Fanny Primmer of Lyndhurst, Hampshire, in 1880. The couple lived in London for a time but returned to Lyndhurst in 1881 and built a large house and studio named The Firs, where Emms lived for the rest of his life. He died in Lyndhurst.
    • His painting of "Callum" a Dandie Dinmont Terrier hangs in the National Gallery of Scotland. In 1919, the owner of the dog, James Cowan Smith, donated £55,000 (£2,689,000 in 2021) to the National Gallery of Scotland with a requirement that obliged them to display the painting on its walls in perpetuity.
John Emms's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging up to 554,500 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 1998 the record price for this artist at auction is 554,500 USD for The Kennel Club: Saladin, Witchcraft, Champion, Stately, Ladye, Dusty; Old Faithfuls: Sally, Graff..., Gorgius, Rockwood, Bell... (Two Works), sold at Sotheby's New York in 2012. John Emms has been featured in articles for ArtDaily, Christie's Daily and The Art Newspaper.
    • The most recent article is Exquisite Dog Paintings from Frances G. Scaife Collection to Be Presented at Hindman written for ArtDaily in November 2022.
Emms is considered a painter of great ability. According to the American Kennel Club, his painting The New Forest Foxhounds is valued at an estimated $800,000–$1.2 million.
