Miniature moneychanger's balance box. Second half 18th century. Probably from eastern France or Germany. The case is made of dovetail-mounted sycamore maple. It is finely painted in ink on all four sides and on the lid with various landscape scenes and figures. The hinged underside forms a tray on the front of the box. The lid features an ivory openwork circle in the center to accommodate the turned ivory and ebony scale column. Scale with bronze arms and trays. Bronze knob, hinges and hook. The interior is adorned with a later silk fabric. A small old graft to one corner of the tray.
