DOCUMENTS (Georges Bataille) – Complete Review: 1929 (7 issues) + 1930 (8 issues) Doctrines, Archaeology, Fine Arts, Ethnography – Paris, 1929-1930
Description: A set of 15 issues of the renowned journal Documents, an "illustrated magazine published ten times a year," edited by Georges Bataille with Georges Henri Rivière, Carl Einstein, and Michel Leiris. A leading journal of the dissident avant-garde, at the crossroads of archaeology, ethnography, fine arts, and popular culture. Published in Paris, 39 rue La Boétie (1st year), then 106 boulevard Saint-Germain (2nd year).

    Contents of the collection
Year 1, 1929: 7 issues, including issue no. 1 (articles by Dr. Contenau, Paul Pelliot, Josef Strzygowski, Georges Bataille "The Academic Horse," Carl Einstein on Picasso, Michel Leiris, Georges Limbour on Klee, G.-H. Rivière on the Trocadéro, André Schaeffner on Stravinsky).
Year 2, 1930: 8 issues, including issue no. 1 (Bataille "Base Materialism and Gnosis," Marcel Griaule, Jacques Baron, Jiujiro Nakaya, Robert Desnos; chronicles; photographs by Jacques-André Boiffard).
A major source for the history of dissident Surrealism, French ethnography, and photography of the 1920s and 30s (Boiffard, Man Ray, Eli Lotar, Karl Blossfeldt). Foundational texts by Bataille ("Informe," "Bouche," "Le gros orteil," etc.), the Critical Dictionary, Leiris, Einstein, and Desnos. A highly sought-after journal, rarely offered in such a substantial set.
