    anthropomorphic mask
Lega culture, Democratic Republic of Congo
First half of the 20th century
    Wood and pigments
    H. 17.5; L 11.5 cm

Small anthropomorphic mask in monoxyle wood, whose finely drawn eyebrow arches meet to form a long nasal bridge - thus forming a stylized heart.
Its coffee-bean-shaped eyes are openwork and enhanced with white kaolin pigments. Its small mouth is also openworked to form a horizontal, irregular slit.

This mask was danced during the Bwani initiation rite.

It bears an old collector's label on the reverse.
