    anthropomorphic mask
Lega culture, Democratic Republic of Congo
First half of the 20th century
    Wood, plant fibers and pigments
    H. 24; L 14 cm (without beard)

This monoxyle anthropomorphic wooden mask is oval in shape. The lower two-thirds of the face are highlighted with white kaolin pigments - an area delineated by the arches of the eyebrows meeting in a long nasal ridge, forming a stylized heart.
The openwork eyes and mouth are almond-shaped, while the chin part of the mask is adorned with a beard made of plant fibers.

This mask was danced during the Bwani initiation rite.
