    ANTROPO-ZOOMORPH MASK
    Djimini/Ligbi culture, Ivory Coast
First half of the 20th century
    Wood and pigments
    H. 30; L 15 cm

The distinctive feature of this mask is its anthropomorphic face: a tapered chin marked by a goatee, half-moon-shaped openwork eyes surrounded by white pigments, and a pair of incised, pigmented ears. The face is associated with a zoomorphic figure: the ears refer to a pair of wings, and the nasal bridge is a representation of the fertilizing hornbill known as Yangaleya.

The hornbill is a particularly important bird in Djimini-Ligbi mythology.
