Kifwebe MOON MASK
Luba culture, Zaire, Democratic Republic of the Congo
First half of the 20th century
Wood, horsehair and pigments
H. 25; L 19.5 cm
Round, domed monoxyle wood mask referring to the lunar star.
Three spirits are associated with Kifwebe masks, two masculine and one feminine - of which this mask is an evocation.
The incised bands, pigmented with white kaolin, refer, according to legend, to the ditch from which they emerged, and where the spiritual world begins.
This highly expressive mask features a square, prominent mouth, its nasal bridge with incised nostrils extending to the forehead to form a crest, and eyes with half-closed eyelids half-open in two horizontal slits.
The whole is incised with bands arranged concentrically around the symmetrical nasal axis.
This mask was danced during initiation rituals to herald the new moon.
