BABY CARRIER Ba '
Dayak or Bahau culture, Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia
Wood, basketwork, shells, teeth, glass beads
H .: 30; L .: 28; Thickness: 14 cm
(the straps ligatures are not original)
The semi-circular structure features a solid wood seat and a rigid braided backsplash. The latter is covered with polychrome glass bead embroidery. A yellow anthropomorphic figure on a black background is seen from the front, seated, hands and feet radiating with fingers ending in scrolls. The upper arch of the cradle is embellished with four large mammal tooth amulets. The decor is completed by eight shell disks, a frieze of polychrome pearls and pearl pompoms. Two braided basketwork straps allowed it to be worn on the back.
Considered a family treasure, baby carriers play an essential role in childhood. Beliefs dictate that the soul of newborns is not yet attached to the body in the first moments of life. Also, the ornaments of the baby carriers make it possible to retain it, while attracting benevolent spirits (protective amulets) and warding off the evil by means of bells, most of the time offered by members of the family.
