MORTAR depicting the god ZEMI
Taino culture, Dominican Republic
800 - 1500 AD
Gray veined stone
H .: 8; L .: 14; Thickness: 14 cm
This polished gray stone mortar rests on four short legs. It is oval in shape and decorated at the neck with an engraved frieze decoration. It retains traces of white pigmentations in the incisions.
The body is carved in relief with a head of Zemi, recognizable by its hollowed sockets, ears adorned with convex curls, its thin nose and half-moon nostrils and its large hollowed out mouth. His legs are modeled on the opposite side of the mortar. They are joined, the feet joined together and the knees bent, detached from the paunch, so as to form a ring.
