Small medicine chest or travel kit, sheathed in black granulated leather (imitation shagreen), stretched over a wooden frame.

The canted lid is adorned with a movable brass handle mounted on a scalloped plate, while the front features a cut-out brass openwork keyhole, typical of English and French production in the second half of the XVIIIᵉ century. The lock works and retains its antique key.

The interior, lined with original crimson velvet, contains four cylindrical blown-glass flasks, fitted with their four original cut and lapped stoppers. One of the bottles, of a slightly different model, is of a later date, but remains antique and coherent with the rest of the set.
The set also includes a small central measuring glass, used to measure or administer the liquid preparations contained in the flasks - tinctures, alcoholates or remedies.

This type of box, known as a medicine chest or decanter box, accompanied travelers, officers or doctors in the XVIIIᵉ century.

The sheathing in granulated black leather evokes English productions in blackened dogfish skin or shagreen, while retaining a sobriety characteristic of French taste in the reign of Louis XVI.

Comparable models are preserved at the Science Museum in London (Antique Medicine Chest, Anne Mortimer Young, Vernier Press, 1994, p. 24*) and presented by Galerie de La Lande, dated circa 1750-1780.
