Large Italian lacquered box / Cassone lacquered and gilded. Late 16th / early 17th century. This stuccoed and lacquered chest rests on four flattened scrolled legs. It is molded and carved with gadroons on the base, glyphs around the lid and a winged cherub's head on the front. The interior is compartmentalized, with scalloped partitions. It has retained its original lacquer finish. The lock and hinges are attached. The lock is functional and fitted with a key. The cassone is a ceremonial wedding chest. It enabled the bride to store the precious objects that made up all or part of her dowry. This storage chest was an essential part of furniture until the end of the 16th century, before being gradually supplanted by the chest of drawers.
