A LITTLE HISTORY ...........

"Unique house of manufacture and which knew to impose itself, because of the good taste of its compositions. At Tahan, we never look at the price: the important thing is that the name Tahan appears on the object" (Pierre Giffard, Les Fourchambault, 1878).

As the "Prince of small-scale cabinetmaking", Tahan marked his time by the care he took with each of his pieces, which were both works of art and utilitarian. Generally of small or medium size, these pieces of furniture invaded the bourgeois interiors, so much so that according to the Handbook of Elegant Economy (1859), "they constitute by themselves the whole physiognomy of the period".

It was in Spa, Belgium, a small spa town in the Ardennes, that Pierre Lambert Tahan, a spreadsheet maker by trade, launched this enterprise with a formidable destiny. He left Spa for Paris in 1804, and set up his "boxes and kits" factory in the Temple district.

His son Jean Pierre Alexandre (1813-1892) was born in Paris, and helped him from 1837 onwards, to take over the entire management of the company in 1844, his father then ceasing all activity. Jean Pierre Alexandre will then use his ingenuity to start his great pioneer work.
First of all, he separated the workshop in the rue de Quincampoix from the store in the rue basse du rempart. He develops the production of boxes but also realizes more voluminous pieces of furniture, happiness of the day, desks, work tables. From 1845, he also began to advertise in newspapers, a practice still little used.

"Supplier to the King and Princes", he won a silver medal in 1849 at the Exhibition of Industrial Products, and was then called "the prince of small cabinet making". In 1855, he was named "Supplier to the Emperor" at the World's Fair, where he exhibited an extraordinary sculpted aviary. The Court gave him numerous orders, including rosewood planters, coffee tables for the Tuileries Palace, a mahogany and gilded bronze shelf for Napoleon III's office. His store moved to 34 rue de la Paix (1849 -1866), then to 11 boulevard des Italiens (1866-1878).

In 1861, Tahan is thus designated as "one of these manufacturers who anticipate the fashion and give the tone instead of submitting". (La Chronique des Arts et de la Curiosité). Indeed, he quickly collaborates with Julien-Nicolas Rivart to inlay his furniture with porcelain flowers, which will be part of his privileged vocabulary. It is then a new technique, which places it at the top of modernity.

Tahan won a gold medal at the 1867 World's Fair and by the end of the Second Empire employed more than two hundred people in several workshops. Like Rivart, Tahan was passionate about the inventions of the second half of the 19th century, and he himself filed a patent for the cylinder desk, as well as another for the translucent fronted briefcase in 1858.

The Tahan company declined after the fall of the Empire, which had supported it so much. Thus, in 1882, the factory ceased production and the store closed.
