Sellettes were very much in vogue in the 17th century, as small flying pieces of furniture, they were easily moved and used to support lights, torches or even candelabras, later more pompously called porte-torchère. The one we're presenting is in walnut and dates from the Louis XIII period, consisting of a central twisted column between two small balusters, with a deeply molded turned top at each end. The whole rests on three small turned feet. The baluster features a few very small pieces. The low top has been shortened on one side by about a centimeter (perhaps to be clamped along a wall), so we preferred to leave it as it was rather than make a repair that we felt would look unsightly, especially as its patina is superb. Dimensions: height 78 cm. plate diameter 31 cm.
