Pyxide* or communion box in bronze and Limoges cloisonné enamel, decorated with several biblical scenes, notably the Flight into Egypt (the Virgin Mary riding a donkey, accompanied by Joseph, fleeing the persecutions of King Herod), 2 royal figures as caryatids, feet shaped like faces, lid adorned with the initials IHS, 19th-century.
This pyxide is in good overall condition. It is missing its interior and base, as well as the lid latch.
Please note: some minor chips and wear on the enamel; please examine the photos carefully.
* In Christian liturgy, the pyx is a sacred box-shaped vessel used to store the Eucharistic reserve (consecrated hosts). The pyx may be made of ivory, possibly carved, or of precious or gilded metal. In the past, the pyx served as a tabernacle. It was placed in a niche carved into the side wall of the sanctuary, near the altar, or suspended above the altar.
