A rectangular painted enamel plaque signed “Laudin aux Faubourgs de Manigne de Limoges” and monogrammed “IL” for Jacques Laudin (1627–1695) (a member of the famous Limoges enamelers’ family), depicting a portrait of Saint Benedict’s sister, Saint Scholastica*, in a gilded wooden frame (added later), dating from the 17th century.
This plaque is in good overall condition. It no longer fits in the frame (added later).
Please note: some damage at the top and in one corner of the plaque (see red arrows), some missing enamel (particularly on the saint’s arm), scratches, crazing, and signs of age; please examine the photos carefully.
    * Saint Scholastica or Scholastica of Nursia (semi-scholarly form: Scolasse; popular form: Écolasse, formerly Escolasse), born in Nursia in the province of Perugia, in Umbria, in 480 and died in 547, was a Catholic nun, the sister of Saint Benedict of Nursia, and the founder of the first women’s monastery to adopt the Rule of Saint Benedict. She is best known through Pope Gregory I, who mentions her in the second book of his *Dialogues*. Her feast day is February 10. Her attributes are the monastic habit, a dove, a lily, the book of the Rule of Saint Benedict, a crosier, and a crucifix.
