Here is a rare relic in an unusual presentation.
A contact relic is encased in a terracotta shell. On the edge of this shell, shaped like a small disc, the inscription reads "EX DOMO SS MARTYRIUM JOANNESET PAVLI IN M.CAELIO," meaning: from the house of the martyrs of Saints John and Paul on the Caelian Hill.
On the slopes of the Caelian Hill, below the Basilica of Saints John and Paul, lies an archaeological complex known as the site where John and Paul lived, suffered martyrdom, and were buried. This relic was taken from this site.
Clearly identifiable, a wax seal from the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ authenticates this beautiful piece. The basilica is, in fact, controlled by this Congregation and notably houses the tomb of its founder, Paul of the Cross.
