Exceptional and extremely rare privateer's chest in solid oak. The wood is richly carved with rosettes. The bottom of the trunk is pierced with holes that enabled it to be bolted to the floor of the captain's cabin on ships. The interior features large wrought-iron hinges, chiselled into the lid. The central hinge is fitted with a lug which, once the lid is closed, hooks onto the rear panel of the safe to prevent the lid from being torn off or forced open. It's a real safe. The safe still has one of its two wrought-iron side handles. Originally, there was an additional lock behind the front latch, but it no longer exists. However, the latch remains with its very large hand-wrought iron padlock and original key.
