Magnificent set of 6 engravings from the 17th century Les Gueux series by Jacques CALLOT (1592-1635). These 6 original engravings from the Les Gueux series were magnificently engraved in the 17th century. The set is highly decorative. The subjects are engraved and depict Italian beggars. They belong to the series of twenty-five beggars or beggaresses, probably drawn in Florence and printed in Nancy around 1622 / 23. The 6 engravings are numbers 21 - 15 - 5 - 7 - 14 - 13, representing: N° 5: the beggar on crutches wearing a hat and seen from the back N° 7: the beggar with the rosary N° 13: the puny man N° 14: the beggar with a wooden leg N° 15: the one-eyed woman N° 21: the obese beggar with downcast eyes Magnificent gilded frame. Each engraving is elegantly framed with a gilded passe-partout. Dimensions of each engraving (in the passe-partout): height: 14.5 cm / length 9.5 cm Jacques Callot, born in Nancy in 15921 and died in Nancy on March 24, 16352 , was a draughtsman and engraver from Lorraine. Among his best-known works is a series of eighteen engravings entitled Les Grandes Misères de la guerre (or Les Misères et les malheurs de la guerre), evoking the ravages of the Thirty Years' War then raging in Europe. He is considered one of the masters of engraving. His style is characterized by clarity of line and depth of inking, enabling his etchings to be perfectly legible, despite the frequent abundance of scenes and figures on engravings with often limited surfaces.
