Glazed terracotta water jug with fleur-de-lis decoration – French folk art, 19th century
This beautiful globular glazed terracotta water jug rests on a flared foot. It features a wide top handle and two side spouts, one for filling and the other for pouring water.
The entire piece is decorated with a relief of fleur-de-lis and plant motifs distributed across the body, highlighted by a cream glaze that contrasts with a beautiful honey glaze with fine cracks from age. This decoration gives the piece a rustic yet elegant character. Water jugs were traditionally used in the south of France to keep water cool thanks to the natural porosity of terracotta. This piece is also a lovely decorative object evoking regional folk art.
Good overall condition with a beautiful patina from use. Note a few small chips in the glaze on the base and some slight signs of age, which do not detract from its appearance (see photographs).
An authentic piece that would be a natural addition to a collection of antique ceramics or to the décor of a country house.
