Very elegant pair of Empire period sconces in gilded bronze, with three sconces by Pierre Philippe Thomire, taking the shape of the face of Apollo. The Sun god carries, like a canephore, a flowery basket in which a twisted brandon (torch) is inserted.
This model of arm of light representing a burning brand was very successful at the beginning of the 19th century, under the First Empire. Many variations were thus created by Pierre Philippe Thomire and André-Antoine Ravrio, each with identifiable characteristics.
Thomire used this specific Brandon model on other models. With the same winged lotus flower overhanging a star (cf: Dumonthier - Lighting and Heating Bronzes - pl. 34).
The refinement of this pair is also due to the presence of the mascaron of the Sun God, Apollo.
The latter is topped with a basket of flowers, from which escape the three arms of light decorated with acanthus leaves and palmettes.
The cups chiselled with scales, the guilloché binets with crosses and florets.
Beautiful state of preservation, probably regilded, the top of the bobèches slightly warped. Two screws formerly replaced.
Very rare model.
Empire period.
