Notes: The flowering plum branch held an important place in the samurai’s imagination. Blooming at the end of winter, often while the cold still lingers, it symbolized resilience, courage, and the ability to overcome adversity. Its delicate flowers, appearing before those of other trees, also evoked the warrior’s determination and nobility of spirit in the face of trials. For the samurai, the flowering plum tree thus represented elegance combined with inner strength, serving as a reminder that a true warrior must cultivate virtue and discipline as much as martial skills.
