JAPAN - Edo Period (1603-1868).
Half-mask of a samurai known as a "Mempo," made of wrought iron lacquered in matte cinnabar red.

The mask features a pronounced chin, a movable nose, a prominent black horsehair mustache, pierced nostrils, a red lacquered upper lip, visible upper and lower teeth, and a sweat hole under the chin.
The interior is lacquered red (the color red was meant to inspire courage and conceal blood).

The five-tiered "Yodare-kake" (gore) is made of wrought iron lacquered in glossy black and braided with midnight blue silk; the reverse is also lacquered in glossy black.

Dimensions: 27 x 18 x 10.5 cm.
