A student of Léon Cogniet, Dominique Magaud exhibited from 1841 at the Paris Salon. Then he moved to Marseille in 1853 where he became one of the most famous painters of the Second Empire. Magaud was one of the greatest representatives of classical painting of the Second Empire. He made three trips to Italy, the first of which was in 1857. He was the director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Marseille between 1869 and 1896. He was particularly active in the 1850s and 1860s.
He was a great decorator, notably for the Hôtel de la Préfecture, the Palais de la Bourse, the Palais des Arts and several of the city's great cafés - notably the Café des mille colonnes and the Café des Deux-Mondes - the Grand Hôtel and the Pavillon Gabrielle, as well as the Marseille religious circle.
Magaud created the decor of the great Marseilles cafés, which were very fashionable at the time: the ceiling of the famous Café des Mille-Colonnes (Le Triomphe d'Amphitrite and L'Éducation de Bacchus), and at the Café de la France on the Canebière, La France offrant des couronnes aux hommes qui l'ont illustrée. In 1858, he composed Marseille receiving the products of the different nations of the globe and offering them his own in exchange for the Café des Deux Mondes and, in 1860, Cybèle on a chariot drawn by lions for the Grand Hôtel.
His greatest work is undoubtedly the set of fifteen historical paintings in the historical gallery of the Religious Circle of Marseille on the theme of the civilizing genius of Catholicism, which was presented as the pictorial equivalent of Chateaubriand's work!
All these works have now disappeared but our mythological painting on the theme of the childhood of Bacchus and dated 1858 is a fine example of his art. It may well be a painting in connection with - perhaps a smaller version of - a decorative element on a mythological subject.
