Painting on wood by French painter Hippolyte Girard (1847-1891).
Born in Paris, this self-taught artist was particularly fond of Normandy, one of whose capital cities, Caen, featured regularly in his work.
This work, painted in 1890, depicts a snow-covered Normandy landscape, cold and dead, with the trees stripped of all leaves. This landscape, from which life seems to have deserted, is dark and yet magnificent.
The painting is presented in a gilded wooden frame, carved with scrolls, pearls and friezes.
This painting will appeal to lovers of deep, old works.
