This large and beautiful oil on canvas is signed J. Izier, I have little information about him, although his talent as a painter is beyond doubt, he is an artist who is rarely encountered on the market, in doing my research I found only a few paintings by him in recent years. I wondered if it was not a pseudonym, many painters used it to escape the galleries where they were under contract, but no document attests to it, many young artists disappeared prematurely between 1914 and 1918, he may have been one of them.
Resolutely post-impressionist, this landscape is imbued with the light of the Mediterranean coasts, contemporary with Jean Baptiste Olive, it seems imbued with the same values, his qualities as a colorist and his ease in playing with light and contrasts lead us into a Provence illuminated by a charm that has definitely disappeared. This work which, I think, represents Bandol, is painted between sky and sea, in a sort of ocher monochrome that goes from the lightest beige to brick red through salmon and old pink hues, the coast and the village are underlined from the pale blue of the sky at the end of the day to the more intense blue of the Mediterranean Sea which plays with the last rays of the sun. Full of the soft light of the evening, the village is peaceful, only two or three people can guess near the houses while we see a few fishing boats returning to dock.
This painting is similar to the work of Jean baptiste Olive which appears in the catalog raisonné of Messieurs Gamet under number 113.
