DETAILS
Original oil on original canvas, signed lower right.
Lovely representation of a seaside probably located along the Normandy coast where the painter used to go. The scene is animated by 3 figures, towards the center of the painting, but that is not the main point... The perspective is remarkable with this darker horizon line acting as a border and by which one has the impression to be caught. The contrast of colors and the work done on the light brings a balance between the sky, the sea, the sand and the rock, particularly successful. Stunning bright painting. Very nice frame.
DIMENSIONS : Unframed : 46 x 55 cm - Framed : 60 x 6 x 69 cm
PROVENANCE : Recognized french public auction house (from private collection).
CONDITION
Painting : Some fine craquelures and rare small paint lacks (barely visible) or unobtrusive small spots otherwise in very good overall condition.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born August 18, 1920 in Saint-Samson (Calvados) and died December 13, 2001 in Rouen, is a French painter and lithographer.
After his studies at the "Maître Saint-Evode" in Rouen, Gaston SÉBIRE worked, from 1936 to 1944, at night at the PTT to be able to paint during the day, having his first exhibitions in Rouen around 1944.
His participation, on June 26, 1948 at the Galerie du Bac in Paris, in the exhibition "L’Homme témoin", states his belonging, alongside Bernard LORJOU, Yvonne MOTTET, Paul REBEYROLLE, Michel de GALLARD and Michel THOMPSON, to the eponymous group which, around the art critic Jean BOURET author of the "Manifeste de l’Homme témoin", virulently advocates a return to Realism against the trends of Contemporary Art, especially against Abstract Art.
For its second exhibition at the Galerie Claude in 1949, the group was notably joined, soon to found the "Young Painting" movement, by Bernard Buffet, André Minaux, Jean Couty and Simone Dat.
Gaston SEBIRE moved to Paris in 1951 and very quickly exhibited in the Visconti, Charpentier, Drouant and later Findlay galleries. His first major achievement was to design the costumes and sets for "L'Ange gris", Claude DEBUSSY's ballet for the Marquis de CUEVAS in 1953. That same year, he won the "Casa Velásquez", which he made part of the 24th artistic promotion with those who will remain his friends and who are Jacques BERLAND, Marcelle DELORON, Jean JOYET, Sauveur GALLIÉRO, the engraver Lucien GUEZENNEC, Henriette LAMBERT, the sculptor Olivier PETTIT, Ernest RISSE and Geoffroy DAUVERGNE. The artist's daughter, Claudine SÉBIRE, evoking the initially darker paintings that the "BENEZIT" Dictionary places for her part in the suite of Francis GRUBER, restores the influence on her painting of the two years spent in Madrid: "Towards 1957 , his compositions became brighter. It is this aspect of his painting that has earned him his success in the United States.
He lives at 3, Rue Dugay-Trouin in Rouen, then at Bois-Guillaume until 1957, finally 160 route de Paris at Mesnil-Esnard.
Attached to the School of Paris and extending a practice of landscape, inherited from the French painters of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Gaston SEBIRE was appointed Painter of the Navy in 1973. He became a member of the Academy of Sciences , Belles-Lettres and Arts of Rouen in 1973.
Throughout the second half of the 20th century, he exhibited in the main Parisian Salons and was notably part of Maurice BOITEL's group at the "Salon Comparaisons", for 45 years. For René HUYGHE and Jean RUDEL, Gaston SÉBIRE is to be situated, in fact with Maurice BOITEL, but also Guy BARDONE, Albert LAUZERO, Michel RODDE, Michel de GALLARD, Jean POLLET and Camille FLEURY, among the painters who "have endeavored to translate the fleeting aspects of nature into an art which tends towards permanence".
Numerous prizes, distinctions, critical receptions and testimonials, an important bibliography and a multitude of exhibitions, have marked the life of Gaston SEBIRE (see biography on Wikipedia).
