Jean Baptiste Auguste Clésinger, known as Auguste Clésinger, was a French sculptor particularly well known for his connections to George Sand—whose son-in-law he was—and to Frédéric Chopin, for whom he sculpted the tomb. Auguste Clésinger was the son of Georges-Philippe Clésinger, himself a sculptor, who trained him at the École des Beaux-Arts in Besançon, where he was a professor. He made his debut at the 1843 Paris Salon with a bust of Viscount Jules de Valdahon. His last exhibition took place in 1864.He created numerous busts, notably those of the actress Rachel Félix and Théophile Gautier, as well as the statue of Louise of Savoy from the series “Queens of France and Illustrious Women” in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. Clésinger caused a scandal at the 1847 Salon by presenting his *Woman Bitten by a Snake*. This Romantic sculpture was based on a cast made of Apollinaire Sabatier, Charles Baudelaire’s muse, who was then the mistress of the wealthy Belgian industrialist and art collector Alfred Mosselman, who commissioned the work.⁴ Through this exceptionally large sculpture, Auguste Clésinger fully expresses his talent and skill as a sculptor.
    BARBEDIENNE COLLAS
Ferdinand Barbedienne partnered with Achille Collas in 1838, founding the A. Collas & Barbedienne, to produce and market reduced-scale copies of sculptures using various materials, such as alabaster, wood, bronze, ivory, and soapstone. They reproduced, in bronze and on a smaller scale, a large number of sculptural works housed in European museums, intended to adorn modern interiors. In addition, they developed new chemical processes for patinating the bronzes.
