Bacchus child, large terracotta group on base. 19th century.
This very decorative and imposing sculpture is a work from the end of the 19th century, based on the work of Bénédict Rougelet (1834-1894)) of which a marble copy is kept at the Musée d'Orsay, of slightly smaller dimensions our copy signed on the Rougelet terrace is in terracotta, the whole has a very pretty patina, and is placed by nesting on a very elegant molded wooden base in imitation of green marble with frieze of bronze acanthus leaves.
The whole forms a very beautiful decor, the base but greatly enhances the sculpture, the subject presents a bacchanal scene with 3 intoxicated putti with musical instruments such as pan flute and tambourine, the 3 naked loves stand or stand hold on to each other in a sort of dance movement with a charming imbalance, their bodies are very chubby and offer the most expressive looks for our greatest pleasure.
Bénédict Rougelet, whose real name is Benoît Rougelet, is a 19th century French sculptor from Burgundy, born in Saône et Loire in Tournus on September 17, 1834, student of the sculptor Duret, he began at the Salon of 1868, the same year, he created the monument in honor of Jean-Baptiste Greuze in Tournus, a talented artist who nevertheless led a bohemian life, he was rewarded with an honorable mention at the Salon of 1887 and at the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
