Mounted on a rectangular base of veined gray marble.
Italian work from the late 19th century.
Total height: 25 cm.
Height of the bronze alone: 22.5 cm.
(Hand-restored).
This statuette is a 19th-century bronze reduction of the famous marble statue of Emperor Augustus, discovered in 1863 at the Villa of Livia in Prima Porta, near Rome.
Augustus, the first emperor, is depicted as a “Thoracatus” (general in cuirass), in the adlocutio pose, addressing his troops. At his feet, the small Cupid riding a dolphin recalls the divine ancestry claimed by the Julian line (Venus).
These bronzes were purchased during the Grand Tour as luxury “souvenirs” from famous foundries (such as the Chiurazzi or Sommer workshops in Naples). They allowed collectors to display their culture and taste for antiquity once they returned home, serving as a means to assert their erudition as well.
