This bronze drum, inspired by the famous drums of the Dong Son culture, bears witness to the rich craft heritage of Southeast Asia. Cast in Thailand, Burma or Laos towards the end of the 19th century, it features traditional motifs of concentric circles and raised ornamentation, including small frogs on the upper surface, symbols of fertility and prosperity.
Although these drums are inspired by very ancient Vietnamese models, they probably date from a more recent period (19th century), while retaining the refinement and elegance of historical pieces. Their greenish patina and finely chiselled details illustrate the enduring influence of craft techniques handed down through the centuries.
