Superb bronze print with brown patina by Emile Louis Picault depicting a man of good stature, walking and sowing, draped in a garment around his waist. On the terrace are represented sheaves of wheat, a compass, a hammer and a drapery annotated “Per Laborem” translating: “by work”. The artist thus highlights different trades and declares that through work one obtains: “Glory and fortune” as indicated on the front of the base.
Émile Louis Picault (1833-1915) is a French sculptor, raised in Royer. He exhibited at the Salon de Peinture from 1863.
His very extensive work mainly includes allegorical or patriotic subjects, war characters or mythological heroes. These are always accompanied by Latin or French phrases.
