Polyphemus Throwing a Rock at Acis
The legend of Galatea and Acis, recounted by Ovid in Book XIII of the Metamorphoses, tells of the jealousy of the Cyclops Polyphemus, son of Poseidon and the nymph Thoosa. In love with Galatea, a sea nymph, he sees his feelings rejected in favor of the young Sicilian shepherd Acis. Enraged, he kills his rival by crushing him beneath a massive boulder torn from the slopes of Mount Etna. Inconsolable, Galatea then transforms Acis's blood into a river in Sicily that perpetuates his name.
