Until the 1880s, the industrial manufacture of needles was located in Germany, in the region of Aachen, and especially in England, in Redditch.

This town to the south-west of Birmingham was at one time considered the world capital of this speciality.
In the 1870s, its production was estimated at around 3.5 billion units.

In France, although in much smaller quantities, needle manufacturers were mainly located in Normandy.

The first sewing needles were precious objects that were easily lost.

Needle cases were a necessity for preserving these fragile objects, and they are found in cultures around the world.
