Dagestan rug, late 19th century

A superb and refined rug originating from Dagestan.

Before discussing the aesthetic aspects of this piece, it is essential to say a few words about its texture. The knotted pile is almost microscopic, ultra-fine and tight. The rug is supple and lightweight, a characteristic of 19th-century Caucasian rugs.

This structural aspect is amplified by the omnipresence of various shades of indigo blue of great purity and infinite depth.
The central field is composed of successive rows of stylized anthropomorphic figures. Each cartouche appears precisely drawn, each detail imbued with meaning. These figures resemble scarabs or stylized human figures, representing abstract representations of humankind within the tribal world. Amulets and other talismans are also present, serving as motifs linked to protection.

The borders are composed of angular meanders, rosettes, and hooks. These motifs symbolize continuity and eternity.
