Exceptional Maffrash from Karabagh - Caucasus. Circa 1900.
Wool on wool. Perfect condition. Size : 116 x 57 x 46 cm
Here's a rare and spectacular piece: a Maffrash from Karabagh, a region of the Caucasus renowned for its rich textile craftsmanship.
Traditionally used by the nomadic populations of Persia and the Caucasus, Maffrash were large saddlebags designed to hold personal effects and textiles while traveling. Once the camp was set up, they were often used as an improvised cradle or baby carriage.
And if I'm talking about an extraordinary example here, it's for three very specific reasons:
1. A striking color palette
This Maffrash is distinguished by its bright, luminous, almost acidic hues. It's a veritable chromatic firework display, with certain colors - totally unexpected on this type of object - bringing an astonishing freshness and modernity.
2. A rare weaving technique
Unlike most Maffrash woven in Sumak or embroidered with an additional weft thread, this one is made in kilim (flat weave).
This is a much more demanding technique, and one that is rarely used for this format: it is estimated that less than 5% of Maffrash were made in this way.
3. Remarkable finesse
The weaving is exceptionally fine, with an almost unreal regularity. So much so, in fact, that you'd be forgiven for thinking that this piece dates from the mid-19th century, or even earlier.
And the originality of the object itself? That goes without saying. A Maffrash like this is at once an ethnographic witness, a work of textile art and a source of decorative inspiration.
Our collection includes over a hundred Maffrash, complete or in fragment form. A specialized catalog is currently in preparation, but photos are available on request.
And in a modern interior?
Perhaps you're wondering how to integrate such an object into a contemporary space?
Here are some practical and aesthetic suggestions:
Coffee table: by inserting a light wooden structure inside, you can add volume to the Maffrash and create a warm, original piece.
Bench seat: placed horizontally with a small mattress or cushions, it becomes a comfortable seat for two people.
Open chest: turned upside down and placed on its base, it makes a decorative storage space, ideal in an entrance hall or at the foot of a bed.
