Rare bishop's miter embroidered with gold metallic thread. The piece is richly ornamented with scrolls, palmettes and floral medallions, in a neo-Gothic spirit. The gold thread embroidery is enhanced by fine embroidery forming a refined symmetrical composition. On the reverse, two plain pennants fall from the back. The medieval-inspired plant motifs are treated in a delicate chromatic range of powder pink, olive green and celestial blue, enhanced by abundant gold threading.
This miter is fully in keeping with the movement to restore Christian art that was driven in the XIXᵉ century and encouraged in particular by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.
The quality of the decoration and broché evoke a Lyonnais production, as Lyon was then Europe's main center for silks and liturgical ornaments. Provenance, Styl Costumier collection, a Lyon institution founded in 1820, whose collections were dispersed in 2019.
