Of all the carriage clocks, Mercury's is the hardest to find.
Designed, chased and marketed by the bronzemaker Claude Galle (1759-1815) in the early 19th century, this gilt bronze and brown patina horse clock was created by Croutelle the elder. In fact, a preparatory pen-and-ink drawing with watercolor highlights, inscribed and dated Croutelle ainé, n° 126, 1803, is kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale (Cabinet des Estampes).
This magnificent clock depicts Mercury, standing on a carriage in the form of a cotton bale and four wheels of fortune, holding his caduceus in his left hand and his horse's reins in the other.
The animal, in patinated bronze, is wearing a saddle and a collar chased with gilded bronze flowers.
The rectangular base is decorated with attributes of the mythological god: garlands of flowers, horns of plenty, caduceus and laurel leaves. The sides are decorated with attributes of maritime commerce: finely chased anchors and tridents.
The set rests on four "toupies" feet.
Movement overhauled, in perfect working order, with eight-day power autonomy, hour and half-hour bells on gong, wire balance suspension and Breguet hands.
Very good condition, original gilding.
Empire period.
