A Louis XVI style pedestal table, also known as a tea table, with a tilting cabaret top, crafted from solid mahogany. The fluted stem rests on a tripod base with splayed feet. Late 18th century. The Canabas stamp is visible beneath the varnish.

Joseph Gengenbach, known as Canabas (1715-1797), became a master craftsman in 1766. A cabinetmaker and joiner, he worked with both veneer and solid wood, primarily mahogany.

Canabas established himself as a specialist in whimsical, practical, and often innovative furniture. Throughout his career, he produced a large number of small, meticulously crafted pieces. His style was highly distinctive: he used mahogany of exceptional quality, remarkable color, and a very tight grain, and distinguished himself through the perfection of his cabinetmaking. Extreme restraint characterized his work, leaving room for decoration only in the form of a few discreet moldings. The bronze mounts are practically absent.

Our pedestal table is typical of his work.

A beautiful piece for collectors, light and elegant, in very good condition. The original varnish has been cleaned and revived by our cabinetmaker. There are a few traces of previous restorations. The Canabas stamp is shallow; here it is applied beneath the varnish. It is recognizable, but not perfectly legible.
