Glaive Model 1842/1852 De Pionnier. Switzerland, 19th century.
This glaive is closely modelled on the single-bladed M-1831 used by French foot troops. The blades of the Swiss model were made in Switzerland by (S.J.G. NEUHAUSEN) but also in Germany, marked (FHÖSTER, SOLINGEN), (WESTER & Co SOLINGEN) or (GEBR WEYERSBERG SOLINGEN).
This model was used by sappers, fortress troops, telegraph operators and balloon pioneers. A Sapper, also known as a "Pioneer" or combat engineer, is a fighter or soldier who performs a variety of military engineering functions such as bridge building, laying or clearing mines, demolitions, field defenses and general construction. The saw-toothed blade is not intended to inflict horrific wounds, as its dark appearance suggests. It was designed to cut shrubs, which were both in the line of fire and useful for camouflaging the future firing position.
Good overall condition, with traces of use, blunt tip.
