Shaded brown patina proof signed H. Chapu (1833-1891) from the Barbedienne foundry.
Henri Michel Antoine Chapu entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1849. He studied under James Pradier (1790-1852), Francisque-Joseph Duret (1804-1861) and painter Léon Cogniet (1794-1880).
Henri Chapu won the second Grand Prix for medal engraving in 1851, the second Grand Prix for sculpture in 1853, and the first Grand Prix for sculpture (Prix de Rome) in 1855.
Presented at the last Salon of the Second Empire in 1870, "Joan of Arc at Domremy" was transcribed into marble in 1872 and enjoyed considerable success. Joan of Arc, national emblem and true lay saint, was adored long before her canonization by the Vatican in 1920. Indeed, nineteenth-century France was fascinated by the figure of Joan of Arc, a mythical historical heroine.
With this large bronze, Henri Chapu finely explores the path of sincere, elegant naturalism. He chose not to depict the virgin warrior in armor, but the shepherdess from Lorraine hearing the voices asking her to help the king liberate the kingdom.
Joan of Arc is depicted seated, her legs tucked under her body. Her hands are clasped below her, and her grave face is turned skyward. Her flowing hair is held back by a veil. Her simple dress is elaborately draped and her feet are bare.
The name of the foundryman Barbedienne and his stamp can be found.
This bronze is striking for its charisma and the strength it exudes.
